Pool Opening 2024, Part 2 - Removing The Plugs And Installing The Jets
Originally recorded May 18, 2024.
This video demonstrates how to remove winterization plugs and install eyeball fittings and spa jet fittings into your pool. It also shows how to install a Universal Wall Fitting (UWF) for a Polaris Robot Vacuum or similar.
The plugs are removed by loosening the wing nut, and the wiggling the whole plug until it comes loose. In the event one of the wing nuts break, you can grab the rest with a pair of pliers and unscrew it that way so it can be pulled out. The UWF is installed by simply screwing in, then tightening. I used my fingers to install, but you can use pliers. Pliers, plus old plastic, equals cracked plastic, so try to do this toolless.

    Very interesting product - I've never seen this before, so nice to see something innovative. I like that they have their own batteries that will stay charged via AC mains power. This would be excellent in a power outage situation. What I don't like is the double-on aspect. It would be better if they turned on to last used setting as soon as you flicked the light switch, and leave the button/remote business for when you want (or need) to run them off battery. But overall, quite a useful thing I think. Probably won't last very long though (i.e. probably cheap Chinese crap)

    • @jaykay18
      @jaykay18 4 часа назад

      I do agree, if they would come on with the light switch or remain in the last state when power was applied, it would be better. I don't like losing the function of a wall switch in exchange for a small remote than can be misplaced or easily break. If I had even a quarter of the stuff I do now when we had an extended power outage for 9 days, back in 2012, I would have been that much more comfortable.

All the information in the world is at your fingertips, all you have to do is move them the right way on the keyboard. If, after following the instructions, which definitely DID come with it if it were brand new, it still doesn't work, there is obviously a problem with it. And in that case, you'd do exactly the same thing you would always do if you purchased something that didn't work. If recently purchased and under return policy, you'd take it back or send it back to where you got it. If out of the return policy, you'd contact the manufacturer. This isn't life's biggest mystery.

    I have a pool in Michigan which was opened in April because of warm weather and it was crystal clear. I think the timing of the opening along with the closing may have something to do with the water being clear. I do all of the opening and closing all by myself and I open the pool with crystal clear water every year. I think that when the pool was opened in 2017, it may have been clear due to fall and winter being colder than usual which inhibited algae and microbial growth. I hope that you will one day attempt to close it yourself which involves adding chemicals, manual vacuuming, lowering the water level, blowing out the lines, installing the winterization plugs and the cover. When I add chemicals for closing the pool, I usually add chlorine shock before closing the pool and it's crystal clear every time I open it for the season. I also hope that you are able to purchase the tool the pool company uses for removing the stair jets. It's called a wing jet key in which a google search can find where you can get your own jet key.

    • @jaykay18
      @jaykay18 День назад

      I had always thought about closing the pool myself. I'd need some sort of doohickey to interface the air hose with the system, the place I use has a Hayward cover they made that has an air inlet. The problem with closing the pool is it's always a tough time for me, after seeing all the work I put into it and being a nice oasis to this drab, dead cover. Plus the weather is getting cooler out and I don't like that time of year at all. So as much as I hate paying their high prices, I like not having to do that part. Opening it I learned after watching it being done. Then I did it after that. THANK YOU! No pool place has ever told me what that thing is, they can't tell me where they got it, or anything else about it. But sure enough a quick search and there they are. I'd love to have one, but by the same token, I've been getting by just fine without one.

      @@jaykay18when blowing out the lines, you can use a 3/4 inch NPT fitting for an air compressor. Treat it like the sprinklers. Blow one line, let the compressor fill and do it again. As far as the return line. blow the solar out first, then the returns. You can use the multiport to switch whether the return lines are open or closed. Don’t have to bother with the other two valves that are hard to turn. The 3/4 inch NPT fitting screws in on the front of the pump where the drain plug goes.

      @@electricalsmokealarmsandmo1564 Interesting idea. I'd just as soon get an actual blower. But isn't that fun, it would be used once a year if I did. Prices for pool closings have gone insane with recent inflation, so it may get to the point soon where they really are charging way more than they should--and getting away with it. That's robbery, and that I simply will not stand for. So I'd probably end up doing it myself, then become too old and decrepit to still do it, and pay for it anyway. We all know prices go up, but this is beyond insanity pricing on everything, _and no one is doing anything about it._ It's too far gone and there's no fixing it now; at best, it can be maintained for a little while.

    My thoughts were the pool would be disgusting black since back in the fall, you closed it earlier than usual to have Jesse close it. It seems his winterizing is doing the trick for you. I was also questioning on why you had to pound the corners of the pool but then realized that the pool water level is too low and was starting to pop out. The shallow end corner was the worst.

    • @jaykay18
      @jaykay18 День назад

      I don't know if his winterizing is what's doing it, he just does the job right and doesn't cut corners like the other morons. That end of the pool isn't really any more shallow, except the landing for the steps. I can tell you the liner is a lot older now, and a lot less pliable and flexible than it was when new, so it can't withstand stress as well. The old liner got to the point where the vinyl totally dried out and was no longer flexible, so it cracked, which produced a hole for everything to leak out of. The wind then got in there and was able to blow behind it and make it even worse. There was no saving it at that point.

    • @jaykay18
      @jaykay18 День назад

      How long you gotta wait?! The only other thing I could possibly think of when the water was clear was the liner had just been replaced. Perhaps the new vinyl is very slippery and doesn't have any micropores where algae can get hold of? Either which way, the stuff on the cover will completely negate any clear water. Didn't adjust the volume, I left it as is, so that's how it was recorded. It sounded only marginally louder through the headphones that I edit with. While they operate the same, we don't hear the same through speakers and headphones, since the soundstage is different. The headphones give me many more audible cues for editing than speakers do, which is why I use them. I find it actually difficult to edit without headphones now.

    Maybe theres a way to suck the water off the top of the cover with a shop vac so it's not as hard to lift over the edge of the pool? Or put that small pump in again right before you rolled the water-filled bubble over the edge to make it less of a strain on the back

    Hey Jay I am think I found your miss when you did the first slow motion start at 10:03 mark you can see the spark coming from your spark plug wires it looks like it even travel down to the coil I think you have a bad set of wires I thought I was seeing things but it's there!

    • @dynatrak
      @dynatrak 2 дня назад

      I see it. Looks like that wire is arcing to the intake. Good eye!

    • @jaykay18
      @jaykay18 2 дня назад

      I see exactly what you mean. I'm not 100% convinced that's spark, because it goes away once the engine is running. That ought to be sparking the entire time the engine is running as those points open and close and the distributor comes around. I would not at all be surprised to learn that that was simply something stuck to it with like a spider web type material. Can't explain it. The test for sure would be to do it at night because then I could definitely see the spark. But the thing that's throwing me is those are NEW wires, I had replaced them a few years ago and let's be realistic, they only have a few hours on them. Almost guaranteed there's a decent vacuum leak from the carbinator where it mounts up. That will make it run like crap. Not to mention the choke being off.

    Not knowing a thing about pools, other than what I've seen on your channel, you've done it all wrong with the shock. Now I'll have to call the shock company, and speak with the manager! Now in the real world: Having actually swam in this pool, multiple times, it is perfect, the chlorine smell isn't overpowering, and the water doesn't burn my eyes. Just right after a long day of fixing stuff, eating sucky food, getting slimed, and then a brisk walk around the neighborhood.

      Thanks very much. This one is an 02. It had the 4-cylinder 2AZ-FE engine. Toyota dropped the ball on that and didn't make those right. This one lost oil pressure and never warned me. The oil pressure sender was sluggish and didn't warn, if it did I could have shut it immediately and saved it. Still ran for 3 or 4 years, clanking away until it failed. It's been replaced with an 03 Camry, with the V6 engine. Completely different animal, well worth the upgrade. But now they don't even offer the Camry with a V6 anymore.

      Fine, get one with US support. Call the 800 number, "Sorry, all representatives are busy now, please stay on hold and your call will be answered in the order it was received." THIRTY MINUTES LATER, you'll get someone who is simply there to not do their job, but rather to collect a paycheck, who will be of no help, and leave you with more questions than answers. This company WILL get back to you, but you have to bear in mind the time difference between the US and China, so typically interations will take 24 hours. But at least they'll do their job!
